The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) initiative is a critical focus area that will give students the skills needed to increase their options for future careers.
Early exposure and a concentration on hands-on, experiential, and lab-based learning opportunities play significant roles in students' decisions and choices in middle and high school course work and their interest in accessing advanced placement opportunities, pursuit of higher education, and eventual career goals.
It is recognized that for any industry to remain competitive in the global economy, there must be a shift in focus to immerse students in STEM-focused, innovative, entrepreneurial learning environments as part of the K-12 experience.
It has been an honor to participate with the Chase Bank Elementary STEM grant. My students have just completed a geology unit that included identifying the basic properties of minerals and rocks. Rock sample kits made it possible for my students to engage in inquiry lessons that created space for them to construct their own definitions for the three rock types. Within the unit, students learned the basic components of soil and then related the components to plant growth. Students conducted hands-on activities to observe and classify soil. In our study of soil, students used the scientific method to hypothesize if the soil they created or soil that was formed naturally would allow for a plant to grow best. This opportunity has helped me make science learning meaningful and engaging for my students.Ms. Kaly
